THE FINE PRINT
Permaculture Sweden’s funding application for Erasmus+ adult education mobilities, Erasmus+ D-LEAPS 2019-2020 Developing Leadership and Facilitation, Pedagogical, and Hands-On Educator Skills – Program for Permaculture Sweden 2019-2020 has been granted – but at a reduced level. Only 65% of the applied-for mobilities (participants) were funded. Contract signing with UHR, the Swedish National Agency for Erasmus+ is scheduled for end of May 2019 and the configuration of courses and available spots will need to be continuously dynamically reviewed based on 1) the reduced funding 2) the confirmed availability of the intended courses 3) cancellation, rescheduling or full-booking of intended courses 4) the availability of substitute or equivalent courses. Three spots per course had been applied for but due to the reduced funding, for certain courses only one spot will be available, for others two, for the rest (a much smaller number of courses), three.
The strategic needs and goals identified in the D-LEAPS program are as follows:
- Develop leadership and facilitation skills of board members and educators.
- Continue to strengthen pedagogical training of educators – developing the “how” of teaching
- Improve targeted hands-on skills and knowledge of educators – developing the “what” of teaching
- a) Natural building techniques
- b) Renewable Energy
- c) Practical Ecology
- d) Advanced Design
Who can participate
Participants in our mobility activities will be primarily be active members of Permaculture Sweden: educators and educators-in-training such as Permaculture Diploma holders and Permaculture Diploma candidates, board members in relevant working groups, members who have committted to serving as board members, ex-board members who have remained active in the organization, members holding a Permaculture Design Certificate who have expressed an interest in becoming a Permaculture Diploma candidate, members engaged in our advocacies and working groups, especially in our outreach efforts to marginalized and non-traditional potential permaculture practitioners. The project administrator will be in charge of the selection process defined here. In all cases, where all else is equal, a demonstrated engagement in the advocacy and administrative work of the organization is decisive.
The general order of selection of course participants is pre-defined in the program as follows:
- active board members
- members who have committed to serving as board members
- ex-board members who have remained active in the organization
- educators and educators in training, such as Permaculture Diploma holders and Permaculture Diploma candidates, particularly those engaged in outreach to marginalized and nontraditional permaculture groups and/or whose participation would otherwise most benefit the larger permaculture community
- members holding a Permaculture Design Certificate who have expressed an interest in becoming a Permaculture Diploma candidate.
If course spots are still available one week before the course start date, all members of Permaculture Sweden are eligible to fill the course spots. In case of last-minute cancellations by selected participants, all members of Permaculture Sweden are eligible to fill the course spots.
Courses in certain strategic needs and goals areas may have additional selection criteria. Thus for example, for strategic goal 3. Improve targeted hands-on skills and knowledge of educators – developing the “what” of teaching, the following applies:
Participation in these events, which address competence gaps in the targeted areas of natural building techniques, renewable energy, practical ecology, and advanced design, will primarily be offered to educators and educators in training, such as Permaculture Diploma holders and Permaculture Diploma candidates, particularly those engaged in outreach to marginalized and nontraditional permaculture groups and/or whose participation would otherwise most benefit the larger permaculture community. An assessment of current competencies and competence-gaps will assist in making the best match of candidates to courses: those who have some general training and experience in the relevant field but lack the specific competence of the offered course will be prioritized. Any spots still available after this prioritization will follow the five-step selection order defined above.
Up to four weeks before a course start date, all letters of interest will be evaluated as a group and selection criteria applied. If there are still spots available for the courses three weeks before a course start date, a first-come, first-served policy will apply for those who meet the selection criteria.
Certain courses fill up quickly with other participants. In such cases, evaluation of letters of interest and candidate selection may occur earlier than four weeks before a course start.
For certain courses that have special “early-bird” prices, if qualified candidates are available before the “early- bird” price date, candidate selection will occur then.
Administration
A mobility contract specifying all applicable conditions will be drawn up and signed by all participants and the project manager.
All course arrangements, including room and board at the course site, will be made by the project manager once participation is confirmed. Unless otherwise specified, ONLY travel arrangements to and from the course location will be made by individual participants themselves, with instructions as to the applicable travel budget clearly specified in the mobility contract.
Refundable deposit
If we are able to offer you a spot for a course or course block (associated with one travel grant) as defined above, we will ask you to make a deposit of 400 SEK if you confirm acceptance of the spot. This deposit is refundable after the course has been successfully completed. This is to encourage seriousness of intent, careful planning and consideration for the limited spots available, and to recognize the work involved in preparing and coordinating course participation.
Requirements after the course
The participant shall share their experiences and learning outcomes with the institution’s members and the public at large. This can be in the form of an article, photo journal, blog or social media post, etc. and can also be shared via the Erasmus+ Project Results Platform and/or EPALE (Electronic Platform for Adult Learning in Europe). Funding/sponsorship by Erasmus+ and Permaculture Sweden shall be acknowledged. The participant shall inform the institution and project manager of such dissemination and forward dissemination content.
We will also require that mobility participants present some concrete aspect of their experiences and learning outcome during our yearly member assembly, or at a suitable regional/international gathering (e.g. the Nordic Permaculture Festival) enriching and invigorating this gathering, and reinforcing the mutual support system we strive to create for our members, particularly our educators. Participation in the assembly/gathering can be in person (preferred), virtual (e.g. via Skype), via proxy (e.g. someone can present for you), or via media (e.g. a film can be shown). We will also mandate mobility participants to participate in a yearly survey that ascertains which advocacies, workshops, seminars, trainings, hands-on implementations, or networking they can trace to their participation in this mobility project. These results will be shared with our members as well as with the public at large via Erasmus+ Project Results Platform and EPALE .
A warm welcome!
